How to Install an AC Unit

Nothing can make a hot day drag more than not having an AC unit.  However, to install an entire central heating and cooling system can be costly, and damaging to the home and it just isn’t an option for many people.  However, there is a solution that works wonders and that is to install a window air conditioning unit.  This project still takes some work, but is going to be far less difficult and expensive as a central AC unit.  Here are the necessary steps to make sure you install your window AC unit correctly so that you get the most efficiency while keeping the room as cold as you want.

The first question you must have an answer to when shopping for a window AC unit is how much space you want to cool which can be measured in square feet.  The amount of square feet you want to cool will then determine how many British Thermal Units (BTU’s) your new window AC will need to reliably and efficiently cool down the room.  The rule at hand is that for every 100-150 sq/ft of space that needs to be cooled, should equal 5,000 BTU’s.  Take into consideration what room you are going to be cooling as well and factors that could make cooling more difficult on the AC unit.  For instance, a room such as a kitchen or living room that will generally have more people in it, will require a little bit more BTU’s to compensate for the additional heat.

2)  Installation

The most important thing to make sure you have handy when you are going to install a window AC unit is another person to help.  Window AC units can be very clumsy and difficult to handle with only one pair of hands.  Double hung windows are the easiest to install in.  Window AC units will have brackets either attached to it, or separate brackets that the AC should fit snug into.  Important considerations are that the perimeter of the AC must be insulated so that none of the hot air can get inside.  Also, make sure the back of the AC unit is hanging outside slightly enough so that the condensation from the AC unit can drip safely to the ground and not the window seal.  Finally, when plugging in the window AC unit, make sure that the circuit you are using does not have any other large electric appliance’s pulling power from the same circuit.  With a little bit of work, you can make your house cool in a matter of no time.
