Preparing Your Home for Winter

Winter might seem like a long way off yet but it is always worth getting prepared in advance. During the winter months, servicemen are in short supply and getting a problem fixed can be expensive and time-consuming. Better to get things sorted while the weather is warm and pleasant than be stuck with a broken boiler in the dead of winter. If you are looking to get your home winter-ready, then all you need to do is follow this simple guide and you’ll be warm and snug all winter long.

Insulation

Probably one of the most important things to do if you want to get your home ready for the winter and it can be done any time of year. Insulating your loft and walls will help to keep your heat within your home which will not only make it warm and toasty for longer but will also save you on your heating bills. The same goes for your windows and doors – a draughty house will lose heat quickly and you will have to spend more to keep it warm. If you want to start getting yourself ready for those cold winter nights, then this is the first thing to check off your list.

Boiler Check

During the cold winter months, our boilers will get a proper work out and the last thing you want is for it to conk out right in the middle of the coldest nights. In the summer time, make sure you have your boiler and central heating radiators serviced by a professional to make sure it is in top working condition and that any problems are found and sorted out straight away. You should also buy yourself a carbon monoxide detector if you are using your boiler and gas fixtures more than usual.

Regular Use

If you are going away for the winter, that doesn’t mean you should leave your house cold for the whole time. In particularly cold weather, pipes and such can freeze up if not in use and will crack or break down once you return and start your systems up again. Install a timer to your hot water and heating so that it comes on regularly while you are away for short periods of time. This will ensure that that pipes stay in working order and you’re not left with a cold house and a huge repair bill when you arrive home.

Update and Renovate

If you have been putting off updating your heating system for a while now, this is the time to do it. When it’s freezing cold and dark you don’t want to be left out in the cold so make those changes to your home sooner rather than later. It might also be worth looking at other ways to keep your home warm and toasty, such as draught excluders, electric blankets and under floor heating – when it comes to keeping your home warm in the winter, can you really afford to do anything less than the best?
