5 Great Home Improvements To Make Before The Holidays

To quote the superbly popular television show, Game of Thrones, “winter is coming.” For a lot of households this means hosting a holiday celebration of some sort, be it Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or an entirely different festival. So in order to have the best time possible with your family and friends over the festive period, what sort of home improvements should you be looking to make beforehand?

1. Stay Warm

If you don’t have one already, is putting in a fireplace, stove heater, or wood burner of some type. There aren’t too many things that are more Christmas like than the whole family sat around a gloriously roaring fireplace exchanging presents and having a great time. Whilst enhancing the aesthetic and sense of togetherness, be aware as installation costs are often over the £1,000 mark and some models can be expensive to run.

2. Stand the Test of Time

Make sure your furniture is upgraded to the level required for your holiday entertaining events. Is there anything that brings the atmosphere down as much as having people have to stand, or sit on odd bits of furniture that you have rounded up from around the house?  Be it a new sofa, or a dining table and chairs, making sure there is enough space for people to sit, relax, converse and enjoy themselves is an absolute must for hosting a great holiday get together.

3. Kitchen Appliance Upgrade

Get those new kitchen appliances you’ve been longing for before the holidays come around. Could there be anything worse than being in the middle of cooking Christmas dinner when your oven packs up? What are you meant to do with that half cooked turkey now? But don’t limit this to your oven, make sure your dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer or any other appliance you might have is in good working order before diving into the chaos that is hosting over the holidays.

4. Redecorate

The extent of redecorating is dependent on how far you are willing to take it, and what actually needs doing and what doesn’t. In some cases it may be a fresh lick of paint on a few walls to brighten your entertaining space. In others it may be ripping up the floor and laying some new carpet. What we do know though is if you do this properly and in good taste, then it will feel like a whole new room for you and your guests when the time comes to celebrate.

5. Deck the Halls

Put up some festive decorations! We weren’t going to leave this one out!

Whatever you are celebrating, do it in style be it a lush, green Christmas tree, an ornate menorah at Hanukkah, or some beautiful African folk art for Kwanzaa.
