Tip of the Day: When to Water Your Lawn

Many people water their lawns at night so that they don’t lose all their water to evaporation during peak sun hours. But this is backwards. If water is allowed to sit on your lawn, it can grow mold, mildew, and create a host of other problems. Mid-morning is best so that the water has a chance to soak in, and what doesn’t soak in will eventually be evaporated by the sun. If mid-morning doesn’t work with your work schedule, you can do it early in the morning, or better yet, get a sprinkler system that doesn’t need you to turn it on.

We say there’s nothing better than a) a lawn that isn’t moldy and b) a lawn that you don’t have to water yourself.

  1. Does climate factor into this? Would you recommend the same watering program for Arizona (dry climate) as you would for Washington DC (humid climate)? Does the overnight rule apply equally?

    Thanks,
