I love how decking projects have evolved to encourage more outdoor entertaining. For those of you who can plan a pretty picnic but can’t predict the weather, the covered or screened-in porch is a hot project. Nothing rains on a parade like actual rain. Protect your food, your guests and your party reputation by covering up while entertaining outside.
I personally prefer the roof extension look, but awnings with intricate woodwork are a great look for the less invasive solution. If your house has stucco, the awning look is a great way to add character and cover to the exterior.
For the areas where the rain partners up with the wind, covering up the top of the deck may not be enough. Screened-in porches protect your party from the elements and allow for the summer breeze to work its way through your conversations. Guess what else screened-in porches protect you from? Nasty bugs, which can’t work their way to your table if they run into a wall on their way in… I’m sold.

Screens seem like a safer option than tiki-torches. I’m not a big fan of large open flames around woodwork and kids running around. Fire and parties aren’t exactly a positive showstopper. The only flames I want to see are the ones cooking up the meat in my beautiful outdoor kitchen.
Adding a breath of fresh air to your party can work wonders if you protect the guests. Instead of running inside with soggy burgers, sit back and enjoy as you talk about how much you love your covered deck.
Would you prefer a deck awning or screen? What do you recommend?
