Winter is here and many places in the world have harsh winters to endure. If you prepared your home’s rugs before the season began, you will likely have very little to do to keep up with it. Even if you did not make preparations to your home’s rugs before winter started, there are still some things you can do to make them better than they were at the beginning of winter. Everyone wants to keep their rugs and floors in good condition during this season when it is easy to make a mess in your home.
You would, of course, want to focus on your carpets, rugs, and flooring during winter. During the winter time, your rugs can undergo a lot of damage as they are the coverings of your floor and people often walk around in shoes that are covered with mud, dirt, and water, all of which can cause damage to your rugs. One of the things you should have done before the beginning of winter was to prepare your rugs by having them cleaned. The reason you would want to clean any rug that you own ahead of time is so that the season would start off with a rug that is free from sand and other types of debris that could get caught in the fibers of carpet. When people walk into a home with wet shoes, they can cause a dirty rug to get a stain so it is important to have a rug cleaned beforehand.
However, even if you didn’t get your carpet cleaned at the beginning of winter, you can still keep them in good repair. One thing you can do is to move rugs which are lighter coloured to a place where they will not see a lot of traffic. You will likely want to get them cleaned first, or at the very least, remove the visible dirt from them. Light coloured rugs should be moved a place where the only traffic they will receive will be from people wearing slippers or who are barefoot. If you have door mats, you can make sure that these are always present so people entering the home can use them to avoid bringing in mud and dirt. Some homes have doormats inside the front door and right outside the front door as well. This is a good investment and a way to help keep your rugs as clean as possible.
Another way to protect your rugs during winter is to actually put away until the season is over. If you have a designer rug that you have invested in, you might not want to take any chances of it getting dirty. You could simply put your rug into storage either someplace in your home, or in a temperature controlled storage unit. Then when Spring rolls around, you can get your rug and place it back in your home to be a showpiece.
Flooring is just as important to keep protected during the winter. Many people renovate their homes and add beautiful flooring which can last for years if they are kept well-maintained. If you have hardwood floors, you will want to make sure that you don’t have water on them for a significant amount of time by cleaning up any water that gets on them. When people live in areas where there is snow, snow can come into a home on people’s clothing and melt into puddles on the floor. One way to prevent this from happening is to have a designated area where people enter the home and take off their jackets and other outdoor wear. Snow boots, jackets, gloves, and scarves can be hung to dry in an area where they will not drip on your floors. If there are any water spills, make sure to clean them up right away.
Winter tends to be a season when messes can happen easily but if you are careful, you can protect your home’s floors and rugs. Even if you didn’t prepare for winter ahead of time, with a little effort you can make sure that your rugs and floors stay in good condition all throughout the year.
