DIY: Cheap and Easy Bedroom Transformation

The memories of my daughter’s childhood that use to cover the walls of her bedroom have needed to come down for quite some time.  It was hard to replace the pink (yes, pink) paint, the lace canopy with matching curtains, and all of her accomplishments that covered her walls.

Turning this new space into a guest bedroom didn’t mean I had to go with bland.  Instead of putting in a stowaway bed with our spare computer, I decided to make my new space a place for everyone to enjoy.

I started my project by going to Craigslist to find a Select Comfort: Sleep Number bed for about a quarter of the price I would’ve paid in stores.  My husband and I were lucky to buy the bed frame from the same people who we bought the mattress from.  I was also able to find a TV stand, bedside tables and a chair for about half price.

Once I had all my furniture, I needed to decide on the colors for the linens and overall theme (my favorite part).  I certainly didn’t go to design school so I scoped out apartment websites for some great design ideas.  I found it helpful to go to serviced apartment websites to see designs that coordinated with other furnishings.  With my ideas in my head and my checkbook in hand I went to my local department store to buy the linens.  I bought a gold comforter with a light gold pattern and deep purple sheets to have a solid color.  I found throw pillows that matched the comforter and mixed-matched purple pillows to complete the look.

The final step for my project was getting rid of the pink walls.  I was blessed with a husband who can paint, so I left it up to him. If you need some professional tips, check out the New Braunfels House Painting website for some extra help. To make sure we didn’t overdo it on the gold, my husband painted the walls a warm cream color.  To add the purple accent he painted the crown molding and baseboards the same color as the sheets, deep purple.  I completed the look with purple curtains and a gold valance.

The pink walls may be gone, but now I have a room for our guests to enjoy that I have made my own.  The room has also become a place for me to watch movies or just relax when I need some quiet time.  The great thing about it is it cost me just under $500 for the transformation.  It was a simple, cheap fix to change a space that needed updating and add some style to a nest that has become empty.
