You’ve got your space, do they have theirs?
It’s well documented that play has a big role in the social and emotional development of children. It also helps foster the critical thinking and language skills they need to thrive. That’s why it’s important that we give our kids the space they need to let their imaginations take flight so they can do what they do best – play!
Planning and Design
Every successful project starts with a plan. And while the scope of your project will depend on the play area’s location, there are a few key elements that apply to all playrooms: they need to be safe, they need to have plenty of storage, and they need to promote the development of skills like creativity, problem solving, and organization.
Get the Kids Involved
Once you have your overall plan in place the next thing you need to do is develop the area’s theme. This is where it gets fun. It’s also a great opportunity to get the kids involved. Whether you’re creating “Mission Control” for your budding space adventurer, a fanciful castle for your little princess, or the perfect artist’s retreat to nurture your child’s creative abilities, making your child a part of the design process will help you create a play area that is sure to become your child’s favorite room in the house.
General Tips
- Make it indestructible – Never underestimate the destructive power of a bored five year-old. If it can be broken or stained they’ll figure out a way to do so.
- Use play-friendly paint – Cover the walls with a washable, neutral colored paint. It’s easy to clean and allows you to change the room’s theme without having to repaint it.
- Stay organized – To make cleaning a snap and encourage neatness, be sure to incorporate a storage system that allows the kids easy access to their toys, books, and crafts.
- Make it interesting – Fend off boredom and promote skill development by stocking the playroom with a wide range of toys and activities.
