Let’s face it; spending money on window treatments isn’t the most fun way to drop a few hundred bucks. Sure, it’s important to cover them for a number of reasons, but if you’re like most folks you don’t do a lot of agonizing over finding the perfect window treatments. No matter. We’ve got a few easy and inexpensive ideas that will help infuse a little personality into any room.
DIY Cornices
Have you ever thumbed through a high-end interior decorating or architecture magazine and seen those exquisite rooms decked out in floor to ceiling windows? Did you notice how many of them feature perfectly matched cornices? Besides looking really expensive, they add a touch of class to the window treatments. And while most of us aspire to decorate our homes like those found in glossy magazines, most of us have to contend with economic reality. That being said, there’s no reason why you can’t install cornices on your windows. All it takes are a few 1x10s, some hardware, batting, fabric, and staples and you’ll be in business. Check out domesticadventure.com for the complete plans.
The No-Sew Option
If you’re not into the whole sewing thing, don’t fret – there are plenty of options that don’t require any sewing whatsoever. We found some really fun ideas over at Better Homes & Gardens, including a really cool towel window treatment. Get your hands on some fun dishtowels, clip drapery hooks and a café curtain rod. Since they’re easy to move, you can rotate them out each season (not to mention easily wash them when needed).
Film It Up
It’s hard to go wrong with curtains. But if you’re looking for something different, privacy film makes a great alternative. The fine folks over at apartmenttherapy.com have a number of great DIY ideas to get you started. To make your own privacy film, they suggest buying contact paper and cutting out shapes to give it its own unique look. When you’re bored with the look, peel off the contact paper and replace it with a new style.
