When it comes to plumbing systems, most people completely ignore their lines until there’s a problem. However, there are some easy steps you can take to avoid problems and keep your plumbing in great shape. Follow these five tips to protect your lines and keep plumbing problems away.

Kitchen Care

Some things should never go down the drain, and cooking grease is at the top of that list. It congeals as it moves down the walls of the pipe, and leads to expensive clogs. Keep an empty juice container on hand to pour the grease in so that you can avoid these clogs. If you have a food disposal, then be cautious about what goes down the drain. Coffee grounds, fruit peels, and large amounts of food should be put straight into the trash.

Use a Screen

Walk through the plumbing section of almost any store and you’ll find little screens that can be put over your open drains. Buy several and use them when needed. They collect the hair, debris, jewelry and other items that would otherwise go down the drain and eventually lead to a clog. Clean them regularly, and soak them in bleach occasionally to keep them free of mold. It’s one of the most affordable ways to avoid problems with your drains.

Faucet Pressure

When it comes to pressure, there are a few things you can do to protect your fresh water lines. Install a pressure regulator where the main line enters the home. This will reduce the pressure on your fixtures so that you can avoid leaks and replacements down the road. You should also take it easy when shutting faucet handles. Using excess pressure to tighten the handle more than necessary will wear down the washers faster.

Use a Plunger

Clogs will happen, and a specialist at A P Plumbing says that a small issue can quickly turn into a big problem.  Some commercially available chemicals will damage your drain lines. If you have an older homes with copper plumbing, you should never use chemical agents. Instead, address the problem with a plunger or a snake and break the clog free.

Paper Products

Another common mistake people make is to drop paper down the drain. This includes baby wipes and sanitary products. However, they don’t always break down. If it’s not toilet paper, it should go in the garbage can. Invest in a small one with a lid for the bathroom.
