DIY Window Ideas

Every architect, whether involved in restoration or new build, knows that as soon as new windows are installed people begin to notice a property, sometimes for the first time. This is because windows have the effect of adding a finished, polished look to any building, whether it’s an office block or a private residence. For this reason it is worth taking some time to make sure windows look their best, not simply outside as a way of enhancing the appearance of the property, but also inside to make the most of some of the property’s most important features. Here are a few tips on DIY windows and how to make the most of them.

Surfaces and textures

Feature windows that are unusual shapes, for example, featuring curves and arches, in addition to standard windows, can be made to look stunning with a little imagination. Depending on personal taste, it is possible to change the entire look of a room by altering window accessories and introducing striking colors. Home improvement stores and online retailers carry decorative self-adhesive window film in a wide variety of patterns and colors, from stained glass and etched lace effects to designs featuring flowers, birds and trees. The film is easy to apply, inexpensive, provides privacy and UV protection and when fitted can transform an ordinary window in a room into an attractive feature.

Frames

Wood window frames can be really stylish, whether treated with stain and varnish in natural tones or painted. Softer, muted hues make window frames look sedate and elegant, while vibrant colors create a contemporary feel to the external appearance. The same principles apply to internal window frames, which can be painted to match or to contrast with carpets, drapes, blinds, lampshades or indeed any element of the interior décor. Stuck with white uPVC frames and sills? Not anymore: with the aid of primers and undercoats there are specialist paints available that will treat metal and plastic as well as uPVC. This is good news for anyone who is experiencing yellowing of older white window frames or fading of colored ones. Always be meticulous about preparing surfaces according to manufacturers’ instructions before applying paint to any surface, as this will ensure the result looks smart and professional.

Accessories

With the textural and structural options dealt with and the paint applied, the next issue is dressing the windows in a suitable style. Everyone has their own personal preferences when it comes to choosing drapes or blinds and there is certainly plenty of choice. Venetian, Roman and roller blinds provide shade and are stylish with or without drapes. Try harmonizing colors with soft furnishing such as lampshades and scatter cushions for a coordinated effect. Alternatively, plantation shutters provide an excellent finishing touch to any window, no matter the age or style of the home and irrespective of whether traditional or contemporary décor is chosen. Louvered shutters come in all shapes and sizes, and a range of materials. They can be made to measure to match awkward shapes, such as arches, and fitted either internally or externally.

Make the most of windows both outside and in and enjoy natural daylight in a stylish home setting.
