South Africa has a rich culture. From tribal traditions of years passed to present-day cosmopolitan preferences in big cities like Johannesburg, you can find it all.
However, how do you mix the past with the present and evoke a modern interpretation of South African design into your home? Here are three principles to keep in mind that will help you blend the old with the new and create a wonderfully modern South African-inspired space.
1. Turn down the volume
It’s easy to get carried away with the rich colors synonymous with traditional tribal garb. However, it can quickly make a space look themed and overdone. Try sticking to neutrals to create a clean, serene, and welcoming space. Allow texture and patterns to make a bold statement – color isn’t the only way to leave an impression.
2. But don’t be afraid to go there

Sometimes you will fall in love with a very specific part of a culture. Even if it is “obvious,” don’t be afraid to go with your gut. For example, tribal masks are quintessentially African. If you like them, add it! It can make a great statement. The key is to use it in moderation and as accessories, which can easily be switched out if you fall in love with another design style.
3. When in doubt, mix patterns from different style periods

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns from different style families. For example, choose a graphic animal print that evokes the safari and mix it with a contemporary striped fabric as seen above. The key is to keep the items in the same color family, or at least make sure one color is repeated throughout the space to ensure cohesiveness.
4. When all else fails, look for examples
If you are still worried about incorporating a modern interpretation, look for outside inspiration. For example, search for South African accommodations on Google and peruse through the listings’ photos. Especially in cities like Durban, which is an up-and-coming metropolitan destination. Hotels are spending top-dollar to hire designers that can transform their space into a luxurious homage to South African traditions. Thus, a quick Google search of “accommodations in Durban” will result in an endless amount of inspiration.
