Enter the market for a new bathtub and your head will start to spin. Where do you start??? You probably never dreamed that there are so many different options available. You practically need a dictionary to understand all the terms and options offered to you.
The best way to begin any new shopping mission, particularly when buying something like a bathtub which is a long term investment, is to first educate yourself in the subject. This way you will have a head start on what you’re looking for, making the experience so much more enjoyable. In this article I will attempt to arm you with the most important essentials of the bathtub world.
What you need to know:
The first question you will encounter is inevitably what kind of tub you are looking for. There are three basic tubs which you will have to consider.
Whirlpool Tub- A whirlpool is likely the most popular choice of tubs. This type of tub has concentrated jets strategically placed in the interior through which air and water is forced. Whirlpools provide a dynamic, invigorating massage.
Air Tub- The most noticeable difference between air tubs and whirlpools is the kind of massages they provide. Air tubs have many more jets than whirlpools, smaller in size, through which air bubbles are propelled. The effect is a relaxing, soothing, effervescent sensation.
A combo tub is a combination whirlpool and air tub. You can decide between the two variations or enjoy both together.
Soaker Tub- A soaker tub has no air or water jets. There are many who enjoy a massage in the tub but there are still plenty who just want to relax with a comforting, all-embracing soak, uninterrupted. Soaker tubs will provide the widest range of options and styles.
The next main question is placement of the tub. If you are building a new bathroom you can choose whatever you prefer but in an existing bathroom you may have to consider the layout and space on hand.
Freestanding- You will find no greater design statement than a freestanding tub. A freestanding tub stands alone, exposed on all sides. Without any enclosures it becomes a focal point, airy and alluring.
Corner Tub- As the name suggests corner tubs are designed to be installed in a corner of the bathroom, enclosed on two sides. Many corner tubs are large and triangular, frequently accommodating two.
Alcove- An alcove or 3-wall alcove is recessed into three walls with only the front apron of the tub exposed. This is the most typical installation type if you are combining a tub and shower.
Once you have these two main decisions made (and you can make them without even looking at a single tub!) you are well on your way to the perfect bathtub. The next thing you’ll need to decide on is what material you prefer.
Acrylic- Acrylic is the most common preference. It’s available in a multitude of choices in style, color and size. It’s a safe selection because it holds heat well and is lightweight.
Fiberglass- if you are deciding between fiberglass and acrylic than acrylic is more recommendable. Fiberglass is also lightweight but is not as durable, scratching and fading easily, and does not hold heat as well.
Brass and copper- high in quality and aesthetic metal bathtubs are for those looking to achieve a quaint ambiance. Brass and copper are resilient and maintain heat extremely well.
Cast Iron- Cast iron is a substantial, durable material that will hold heat well. The only downside to cast iron is that it is very heavy. You must ensure that your floor can carry the weight of the tub once it is filled with water.
Stone- Stone is a gorgeous, albeit expensive, selection. It has the same pros and cons as cast iron tubs. Stone tubs are often used in luxurious, contemporary style bathrooms.
After these decisions come the nitty gritty details like color, size, style, and of course price. These are decisions you will have to make but with the big ones out of the way it shouldn’t take too long. Knowledge is power, and in this case it’s also a humongous time and headache saver. Enjoy your bathtub shopping experience and revel in the heavenly tub of your choice.
