The latter half of 2013 brought us a swarm of impressive new technology you can (and should) integrate into your home. With so many cool devices set to release, here are the cutting-edge gadgets from last year you should look for in 2014:

- LG SmartThinq. LG’s range of Wi-Fi-enabled appliances expanded this year, featuring a washer with a touchscreen, water-saving cycles and remote diagnostic center that allows you to make adjustments on the fly. Want to check on your whites and find out how long it’ll be before you can load up the colors? Use your smartphone, computer or tablet to see updates wherever you are.
- Nest Protect. You may have already heard of the Nest thermostat, the automated device that lets you personalize your home’s HVAC system. More recently, Nest began to ship the Nest Protect, a user-friendly smoke and carbon monoxide detector. It couldn’t have come at a better time, especially with growing awareness of carbon monoxide’s silent threat.
- SodaStream. SodaStream has been around for years – you’ve probably already heard of the kitchen-sized DIY carbonated drink maker. In 2013, SodaStream made some big moves. By teaming up with companies like Samsung to make refrigerators with built-in SodaStream dispensers, and announcing eco-friendly SodaStream caps, SodaStream made a bid to super-size its presence in the beverage market.
- Doorbot. Doorbot is a sleek, multifunctional device that latches to your doorframe. Doubling as a doorbell and a security camera, Doorbot alerts you when someone approaches your front entryway. The corresponding smartphone app allows you to take a peek at who’s outside without ever getting up or unlocking your door. Think of it as a next-gen peephole.
- The BioLite KettlePot. As a tea drinker, I’ll admit I’m biased. But the BioLite KettlePot is an impressive little piece of technology that heats your water in a jiff – at home or on the go. Use it first thing in the morning, or take it with you to the office or the campsite.

One of my favorite things is a powerstrip/surge protector that has the USB ports in it!
