Create More Storage Options in your Bedroom

Dealing with space restrictions and lack of room can get really frustrating when you are genuinely doing your best to be more organized. However hard you try, you realize that you simply have nowhere to store your (new) stuff and it is more likely that they will end up nicely piled on the floor or squeezed into a box…

I know the feeling and hope this post will help you out. First of all, the best way to stop the buildup of clutter in your bedroom is to make use of the vertical space and the walls. Then you can get your hands dirty and imagine savvy space saving solutions you think are appropriate for the style of your room. I have put a few suggestions of very versatile bedroom furniture together as well as space saving decorating tips to help you get started

A storage headboard

Smart and creative, storage headboards are all the rage these days and if you search the web you will find lots of tutorials and great examples of storage headboards you can make yourself. Whether your bed is already complemented by a headboard or not, you can either go for a shelving unit that will make both your bed and headboard stand out or a bookcase headboard you can place behind your bedstead.

The shelving unit featured above is an easy way to save money and space. Simply hang the shelf or the shelving unit above the bed frame so that it looks like an original headboard. The second example below features a bookcase headboard you can buy online. No need to hang it on the wall or spend hours finding the right measurements as it comes in different sizes in order to complement any bed size.

A storage bed

Storage beds are also very versatile pieces of furniture and since getting a smaller bed to save space isn’t an acceptable option (because there is no way I am getting rid of my king mattress) I have selected three bed designs that offer different storage solutions.

Ottoman beds and divan beds both offer a large storage area that is perfect for storing bed linen or hide imposing objects. This extra storage area is located underneath the mattress and hidden in the bed base. Divan beds are available in a large variety of different options: you can choose it with two drawers, four drawers, end-storage or lateral sliding panels depending on the room available you have around the bed to access the drawers.

Contrary to divan beds, ottoman beds are designed with sprung or hydraulic leavers that raise the mattress and reveal a substantial amount of space which doesn’t require you to make room around the bed in order to access the storage area.

A Murphy’s bed requires a bit more of an investment but really is the best you can imagine to save the more space. The mechanism of a Murphy’s bed keeps the bed base vertically up against the wall during the day so that you can enjoy all the space available on the floor and then you just have to put it in the horizontal position on the ground at night for sleeping.

Space saving tips:

Underbed drawers: If you are not ready to upgrade your bed frame for a storage bed you can still consider placing underbed drawers and storage boxes under the bed to tidy bedding, book or personal objects.

Get creative and make the most of your walls by hanging shelves above the radiator or your bed and try to avoid floor standing furniture that is more space consuming than wall standing pieces of furniture.

Use vertical space for imposing pieces of furniture such as the bed, the dressers, wardrobe and nightstands whenever you can.
