Green Building Materials and Practices for Homes

In my life’s work as a contractor, I’ve focused on bringing eco-friendly building options to commercial projects. Recently, the focus on green building materials has grown exponentially, and that growth is expected to continue. In the worldwide market, the amount spent on green building materials is projected to increase from $116 billion in 2013 to over $254 billion in 2020. Part of the reason for this is that many private contractors and homebuilders are beginning to incorporate green building materials into their designs.

Many of these eco-friendly practices were first incorporated in commercial buildings. For example, consider these green commercial building practices and how they can be implemented in a private home:

As technology increases, new green building practices and materials continue to emerge. Often times, the newest green building materials are most practical to incorporate into commercial properties. Later, as the product becomes proven and more standardized, home builders are able to incorporate the materials as well. Nail-base panels combine a surface that can be nailed into place with a flipside coated with OSB insulation. Use of a single panel in place of dual panels saves time, money and resources while still providing quality construction. Nail-base panels are now available for use in home manufacturing as well as for home additions.

Sometimes the best way to add to a home is with landscaping. If you’re considering improving your home’s exterior with landscaping, take some eco-friendly tips from the Palazzo in Las Vegas. The resort was recently named the most eco-friendly hotel in America and its located in a desert! The resort utilizes carefully incorporated water conservation techniques to keep landscaping fresh and beautiful year round. By means of a drip irrigation system, the complex minimizes water runoff and evaporation while nurturing thirsty plants. Similar systems are available for use on private property. These systems utilize a moisture sensor to avoid over watering. In addition to being green, drip irrigation can save homeowners hundreds of dollars on water bills each year.

I love my work and the opportunities I have to give back to my planet through green building projects. It excites me even more to have the opportunity to share these ideas with others who can incorporate eco-friendly habits into their own homes and lifestyles. Businesses like those in Vegas that receive millions of travelers every year and homes are continuing to innovate the industry. With this innovation, newer and more efficient products will continue come to market.
