Weekend Warrior: Hanging Outdoor Holiday Lights

Putting off hanging holiday lights this year? You’re not alone, but this weekend is as good of time as any to start hanging! If you’re a beginner, have no fear – we can help you through this!

Step 1, plan where you want to hang lights

Look over your house and plan exactly where and how you want to hang your lights. Make sure to measure each area to ensure that you have the right amount of lights to get the job done.

Step 2, use the appropriate equipment

You may need the following:

  • Outdoor extension cords
  • Timer
  • Ladder
  • Hooks and clamps to attach to gutters, window trim, and door frames
  • Basic hand tools
  • Work gloves

Step 3, test your lights before hanging them

It’s always frustrating when you’re ready to turn on your lights, when all of a sudden 20 bulbs are out and need to be replaced. It’s not exactly pretty. To avoid this minor disaster, plug-in all of the lights that you are planning to use and carefully look for dead bulbs. If you find one, try twisting it to make sure it’s screwed in all the way. If this doesn’t work, you can either buy a new set of lights, or try to replace the bulbs.

If you bought new lights this year, don’t be fooled and skip this step. It’s still important to make sure all of the lights are working, since several lights could have been compromised during shipping.

Step 4, start hanging & don’t fall.

(This doesn’t need explanation, just a word of caution)

There are also a variety of reasons why you may choose not to hang lights this year, such as: it’s too cold, you’re afraid of heights, you’re getting older, or you’re not sure how to decorate. If any of these reasons apply to you, consider hiring a professional to hang your lights this year. Below is a quick video that can provide more information!
