After spending weeks clearing the clutter from my home, organizing each room, and giving the entire house a thorough cleaning, I still felt like the interior of my home was lacking and in need of some serious energizing. I knew I was going to have to find some interior décor ideas that fit my budget and matched my DIY skill level. Here’s what we did to revive my home decor:
We Were Playful With Our Backsplash
Since the kitchen is one of the most frequently used rooms in my house, I decided to start there. My original plan was to add a backsplash to brighten up the room. Glass mosaic tile had the shimmer and shine that I was looking for. After a considerable amount of searching, I found an amazing collection of ideas here. I purchased the amount I needed for the backsplash area of my kitchen. Then, I took advantage of other people’s wisdom and watched online videos that walked me through the entire installation process. To my own amazement, the backsplash made an even bigger impact than I had expected on the appearance and atmosphere of my kitchen. Successfully completing that project made me want to do more to brighten up my kitchen.
We Brightened Our Breakfast Nook By Tiling The Island
I have a uniquely shaped window in my kitchen. I decided to add a border of tile around the window to illuminate the space as an artistic feature in the room. My kitchen island was visually mundane, so I thought a little tile might perk it up. I decided to add tile to the side of the island that faces my living area. By doing that, the light that entered the living room window could dance across the tile and energize the atmosphere. Wow, what an impact that made!
With the small amount of tile that I had left from these projects, I made some trivets and coasters. I now had a kitchen that looked inviting and exciting, an island that enhanced two rooms and accessories that tied it all together. For a moment, everything seemed fine.
We Went Unique By Creating A Metallic Bedroom Wall
I discovered that my lovely kitchen made the other rooms in my house look incredibly dull. I decided that a fresh coat of paint would improve the appearance of my bedroom. I painted the room a subtle shade of gray with the intention of adding bold colored accessories to brighten up the room. My bedroom doesn’t have a fireplace or a window with a view to use as a focal point in the room. That’s what made me decide to do the same thing that I did in the kitchen, and create a tile accent wall. I chose a more sophisticated, metallic tile for this wall and used one row of complementary glass tile as a border at the base of my bedroom windows.
I quickly discovered that what works for one room of the house can work equally well in other areas when it comes to updating décor. I’m sure that tiles will be included in some way in my next updating project. I realize in retrospect that I was not unlike the man in the story who bought a new doormat, after which the door looked a bit dull… so he went and installed a new door… after which he noticed the windows needed a fresh coat of paint… etc, until his entire house was transformed into a beautiful home. That’s when he noticed that the doormat seemed a bit plain…
