PROGUIDE: How to Successfully Run Your Own Handyman Service

Running a successful handyman service can be fun, interesting and very profitable. In many ways, running a handyman service is much like running any other sort of business; the more generalized the services are that you offer, the better it can be to get work. There’s a lot to learn about starting your own business, and it’s important that you build a positive reputation for yourself.

1. Choose a specialty. As good as being a generalist can be for getting work in quantities, most handyman services specialize in one or a couple of different types of repairs. This can dramatically help when it comes to promoting your business. After all, people won’t always settle for a generalist. They want someone who is very good at whatever it is they do. Choosing a specialty can solve that issue. Another consideration for choosing a specialty would be to partner with a good home warranty company as an independent contractor. With this kind of an arrangement all you need to do is to do good work and stay on good terms with that firm.  With the best home warranty companies, work will come to you.

2. Find a niche. Before your start out you will want to decide how you will compete in the marketplace. Regardless of the types of repairs you choose to specialize in, find out how many similar services are already in your area. For example, if you have chosen to specialize in plumbing and there are several plumbers working in your area, you might want to consider specializing in a particular type of plumbing such as residential or some other aspect of the trade with less competition.

3. Set things up. A lot of complications can arise when running your own business. Fortunately, there are a lot of legal protections available that can help protect you. One of the first you need to consider is how you want to set yourself up, whether as a sole proprietorship, a partnership, or a corporation. Perhaps the best way to protect yourself in the event of a lawsuit is with a corporation. With a corporation the most that can be won in a lawsuit is the amount of your investment.

4. Set up an office. Regardless of the service you want to set up, you will be dependent on being able to respond when customers call. For this you will need an office of some sort, or at least a number where people can call you at.

5. Set up your tools.  Frequently, when customers call for a handyman service they are at wits’ end for a repair to be done, which necessitates being able to get that repair done quickly.  And if you want to be able to do repairs quickly, you will need as many of the necessary tools as you can get.

6. Execute. Once you’ve finished doing everything you need to get started, the real work begins. After all, at this point you have everything you need to succeed except one: customers. Without customers, your business won’t be anything but an expensive hobby. Until things get rolling you will need to spend every waking hour letting people know about your business and what you have to offer. Fortunately, after you get started, the news about your business will spread. This is why it is important to build a reputation for quality and honesty.

  1. Great article! I started my business this year and have applied some of the steps mentioned here. My specialty is House Cleaning and so far I’m doing really good.
