So you’ve never landscaped a yard before. How hard can that be… right? Have no fear! Sodding, planting trees, and creating flower beds, may seem back breaking, but it’s doable! Reading books, blogs and talking to local hardware stores can give you an edge up on 
your landscape creations. The good news is, you don’t need to know codes, understand how to calculate soil compaction, or cubic water pressure. Even more, you can follow these next steps to help you get started!
DIY Landscape Projects
Sodding: If there is currently no grass in your yard, sodding is something any homeowner can manage. Be sure to know how much water is needed once the sod has been rolled out and how to maintain it after. The video tutorial from Easy2DIY.com explains how to properly sod your yard with step-by-step instructions. Tip: You can also find a neighbor or friend who has the yard you want and ask them what they did to get it.
Planting Trees: There are three major things to know about planting trees:
- Know the right time of year to plant the particular tree you want
- Know how much water to use through the first week
- Know if you should use ropes or wire to help it stand
Research and asking questions at the store are crucial… and so is remembering to lift with your legs! To help start your research, the Home Depot Garden Club has a very helpful article on how to plant trees.
Planting Flowers, Shrubs, & Other Plants: If you like digging around the garden this is right up your alley. Employees at your local nursery or home improvement store can tell you what soil combinations work best and when to plant certain items. Big Do It Yourself Projects
Landscape projects may require much more work than the items listed above. Some projects may include laying brick patios, building ponds, fountains, and butterfly gardens. These projects may require a lot of muscle and time. You can learn anything from a book or watching a demo, and asking plenty of questions. No matter what your project is, too much information is never a bad thing.

A few additional tips for planting trees that have always served me well: 1) NEVER in the heat of summer (fall is really the best), 2) be very careful about digging your hole too deep… the top of the root ball should end up pretty much level with the surface if not just slightly above, and 3) always finish the planting with loose mulch on top – helps keep moisture in, and provides nutrients to the tree as it decomposes!
