  1. Your first step should be to remove the doors and hardware. You want to be able to reach every part without having any issues. Hardware is easy to remove and usually just unscrews. Feel free to update or paint your hardware too. A new set of handles and knobs can make a kitchen look like a new room.
  2. Now you need to prepare the surface for painting. Wash all areas thoroughly. You may need to use some effort in cabinets near stoves and ovens as they can become coated in grease from cooking. Then lightly sand the surface to give the paint a place to adhere. Rinse off any paint or varnish dust and let dry before continuing.
  3. Apply a base coat of primer. Primer helps you to cover up imperfections and makes the paint last longer. Make sure you let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  4. Apply one to two coats of your paint color. Make sure you let each coat dry before you apply another one. You can paint the inside of the cabinets as well or just leave them alone. Open cabinets (without doors) should always be painted. Make sure you do not fill in screw holes or hardware mountings when painting.
  5. Optionally you may complete the job with a clear coating to ward off grease and stains.
  6. When everything is dry, reassemble the doors and hardware. Make sure nothing sticks. If there is an issue you can attach foam button pads to the inside of the doors to prevent banging and sticking.

A good paint job should last you many years and can make your kitchen or other built in cabinetry areas look brand new. Try out some bright colors that match your décor and see how you can personalize your new home!
