This is something I wrote up a couple years ago and re-tell when I speak to groups of remodelers:
I got home from church choir recently and was clicking through the channels when I caught the end of the Detroit Red Wings hockey game. The score was Red Wings, 9 and Blue Jackets, 1.What a victory for the Red Wings!

Now, you may be asking yourself “That’s great Kyle, but what does this have to do with my remodeling business?”
Here’s the tie in; there are some remodeling projects that you land where you just dominate the competition. These projects are typically ones that you land from previous clients who you’ve built trust with. An easy 9-1 win.
Guess what? There are a lot of projects out there that are a lot closer in score, for example a 5-4 win, where you win (or lose) by the slimmest of margins.
In my experience in the remodeling business the difference between winning or losing that close game comes down to the little things such as,
- Explaining the project process better.
- Asking the client questions about their needs & desires on the project.
- Delivering the proposal in-person versus email.
- Sending a thank you note to make you stand out
- Forgetting to explain to them how you are different from the others competing companies.
What will are doing to win more of those close games? Comment below.
